When most of us plan vacations or trips, we usually search for the most popular tourist attractions worldwide – Eiffel Tower, Barcelona, you name it. We like to stay within our comfort zone or choose places that other people have chosen before us and deemed worthy of visiting or exploring.

But if you want to discover hidden beauties or even creepy sights, you might want to go off the beaten track a little.

Unexpectedly so, the most stunning sights in the world are either abandoned or unknown by the general public, whether we’re talking about architectural monuments, houses, places or landscapes. Below I have prepared a list of 10 best places to visit if you’re an explorer or a lover of the unknown, from hidden wonders to creepy locations that will surely give you the chills.

1. Kolmanskop, Namibia

The town of Kolmanskop in the Namib Dessert has been abandoned since the 1950s. Today, it is a crumbling beauty, a ghost town housing long forgotten buildings that are starting to be partially covered by sand. This abandoned place will surely give you an eerie, haunting feeling and it is a unique travel destination without a doubt.

2. House of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Bulgaria

This marvelous architectural structure called The Buzludzha Monument used to be serve as headquarters for Bulgaria’s communist party. After the fall of the Soviet Union, it was deserted and today it is open for visitors. If you want to be put in a trance-like state and experience a feeling like no other, this destination should be on your bucket list.

3. Floating Forest in Sydney, Australia

This breathtaking display of nature’s wonders used to be a large steam ship left astray in Homebush Bay, Australia after World War II. Nowadays, it is truly a sight to see, as it embodies the result of nature and technology blending together, creating something beautiful. This ship has stood the test of time for 102 years and counting.

4. Lake Hillier, Australia

Also referred to as the pink lake of Australia, Lake Hillier is a saline lake with a peculiar pink color that has attracted tourists from all around the world. Because it is a destination like no other, this place surely deserves a mention on our list of 10 best places to visit.

The color of this lake doesn’t change even if you take some of the water and pour it in a bottle and it is said to be so because of a microorganism that’s found in it. If you want to experience a magnificent natural wonder, this is the destination for you.

Located in Abkhazia, Georgia, this train station was deserted after the Abkhazia War in 1992-1993 and left in ruins. However, time hasn’t completely destroyed its aspect, quite the contrary. If you are not scared by the creepy factor, you will be thrilled to discover the crumbling ruins of the hospital that used to house America’s most disturbed patients. Yikes.
